Seven years after his acclaimed and bestselling The Kaufman Repertoire for Black and White, Grandmaster Larry Kaufman is back with his new repertoire book, covering the entire scope of chess openings for both White and Black, in one volume. Two important developments made this new book necessary. Larry Kaufman, who himself routinely plays the lines he advocates to others, discovered that after 1.d4 (the recommendation in his previous book) it became nearly impossible to show a consistent advantage for White, especially against the Grünfeld and Nimzo/Ragozin defenses. The other factor was that chess engines have become so much stronger.Larry Kaufman presents a completely new White repertoire with 1.e4 aiming for an objective advantage in the simplest practical manner. You are presented with two options, while you don’t have to play the sharpest lines. The Black repertoire has been thoroughly revised and updated, and three new chapters have been added.Kaufman’s New Repertoire for Black and White is the first opening book that is primarily based on Monte Carlo search. The highly original analysis has resulted in loads of improvements on existing theory. This is a lucidly explained, ready-to-go and easy-to-digest repertoire with sound, practical lines that do not outdate rapidly and are suitable for masters while perfectly accessible for amateurs.

At this time of writing, The Audiobook Kaufman's New Repertoire for Black and White: A Complete, Sound and User-Friendly Chess Opening Repertoire (New in Chess) has garnered 8 customer reviews with rating of 5 out of 5 stars. Not a bad score at all as if you round it off, it’s actually a perfect TEN already. From the looks of that rating, we can say the Audiobook is Good TO READ!

In Kaufman's previous repertoire book he recommended d4 for white. His main reason was that most players, even masters, were far less prepared against d4 than e4. Based on his advice I switched to d4. And my results improved significantly. I wasn't doing well against the Sicilian or the other main e4 defenses (although my results against e5 were ok). My rating fluctuates around 1900-2000. I used to study openings when I was younger -- 35 years ago -- although I don't anymore. I also took lessons when I was in my 20s from an IM for a little over a year. That was extremely helpful. So, given that I don't have much opening knowledge for a 1900-2000-rated player, starting with d4 was helpful. However, in his new book, Kaufman is recommending e4 for white. He doesn't give a good explanation for the switch and I am puzzled by this. On the back cover of the book it states that Kaufman updated the repertoire since engines have gotten better since his last book and also that he couldn't find satisfactory lines against the Grunfeld or Nimzo and related lines for black. But he says nothing about the fact that players are better prepared against e4 than d4 as he asserted in his earlier book. I wish he would comment on this. The lack of good preparation by many players against d4 was the primary reason he recommended d4 over e4 and this fact hasn't changed since his last book. If one follows his recommendation and opens with e4, then you will be required to learn a lot of theory which I am no longer willing to do. When I open with 1. d4 and 2. c4 as recommended in his first book, I usually get playable and interesting middle games even though I know very little theory (although I do understand the ideas behind the openings). Against the nimzo opening moves I play the Catalan with good results. Many players of the black pieces in my rating range and below have very little knowledge of the Catalan. Against the Grunfeld, I play the exchange lines with Qa4 which requires very little theory (as recommended by Watson in his repertoire book for White). I looked over the Grunfeld section of Watson's book for maybe a few hours and I play the line successfully. Against 2000+-rated Sicilian players when I opened with e4 my results were terrible. I should also mention that although I do not study book lines specifically, I do go over my games afterwards with an engine, so of course, I do pick up some theory by sheer osmosis.
